ABOUT THE WINE REGIONS |

Etyek-Buda - There are few capitals in the world where grapes and wine have played an important role for centuries, and indeed continue to do so, as today’s Budapest. Places like Gellért Hill and the Tabán that are today integral parts of the city were vineyards not so long ago. The oft sung about “Sashegyi Veres”, a red wine made from the Kadarka and Vadfekete varieties, is now just a literary memory; however, the remarkable features of the wine region, which has now moved a little further away, have remained. The area around Etyek, Pázmánd and Velence yields a wide range of wines, which give both an individual and nuanced picture of the terroir around the capital.

The Etyek-Buda wine district is primarily a white wine producing region. The largest area is planted to Chardonnay and Irsai Olivér, but Pinot Gris (Szürkebarát), Sauvignon Blanc, Olaszrizling, Zöldveltelini, Müller-Thurgau (Rizlingszilváni in Hungarian) and Riesling (Rajnai Rizling) are also produced in significant quantities. Although large quantities of black grapes have never been typical to the region, Pinot Noir is no longer produced only for sparkling base wine, and there is 117 hectares of it in total.

Hajós-Baja - in this area, it was fish that brought many people back to wine, mainly to spicy Kadarka, Kékfrankos, aromatic Irsai Olivér and spicy Cserszegi Fűszeres. Its vines, wine, landscape and architecture add to the wealth of the wine district. However, for those unfamiliar with them, surprisingly lush waterfront, green floodplain areas are also connected to the region. Its two independent, eponymous settlements, Baja and Hajós, have their own unique culture to offer, as well as very approachable wines.

The Hajós-Baja wine district is in the southern part of the area between the Danube and the Tisza, on the western slopes of the so-called Bácska loess ridge. It forms a transition to the north and east towards the sandy-soiled Kunság wine district. Administratively, it is part of Bács-Kiskun County. The wine district includes the 1st, 2nd and 3rd class vineyards, as per the vineyard cadastre, of the towns and villages of Baja, Bátmonostor, Császártöltés, Csátalja, Csávoly, Érsekcsanád, Érsekhalma, Hajós, Nemesnádudvar, Rém, Sükösd and Vaskút. The total production area of the Hajós-Baja wine district is 14,874 hectares, but the current area under vine is 1,636 hectares. The area planted with white varieties is about double that of black varieties. The most cultivated varieties are Cserszegi Fűszeres and Bianca, followed by Chardonnay, Királyleányka and Riesling (Rajnai Rizling). The most important black varieties are Kékfrankos, Cabernet Sauvignon and Zweigelt, although there are also some beautiful wines made from Kadarka.

Villány – producing excellent Mediterranean style red wines is located in the Southwest of Hungary, west of the river Duna. A couple of years ago Villány introduced its own appellation control sytem, DHC or Districtus Hungaricus Controllatus which symbolises the region’s strong commitment to high quality standards. Since then the “crocus” has become the symbol of top Villányi wines. Not only strong commitment to quality, but utmost respect of traditions features the winemakers of Villány. There are numerous old wine cellars, cellar villages in the wine region, like the ones in Palkonya, Villánykövesd or Nagyharsány. Our guests are warmly welcome in these cellars for wine tasting. Villány has a sub-mediterranen climate, with a lot of sunshine, early ripening season along with hot summers, long, warm autumns and mild winters. The sheltering effect of the Villány Mountain also contributes to the ideal conditions besides the diverse terroir. Sandy loess topsoils cover dolomite, marl and limestone. Terroir enhances the differences of the vineyards for their aroma and flavour characters, like in Burgundy. Villany produces predominantly red wines, but some nice whites of Olaszrizling, Hárslevelű and Királyleányka have also appeared in the market recently. The wines are among the highly rated ones throughout the country, appreciated both by wine professionals and “average”consumers. The Cabernets and Merlot are blended here with Syrah, Pinot Noir or the local Kadarka and Kékfrankos (Blaufrankisch) which is quite exceptional. Lately Cabernet Franc has become a favourite grape among most of the winemakers.

Szekszárd – Gentle hills, sunshine, rosé wine, Kadarka, Bikavér, Mediterranean atmosphere, neat vineyards characterise the Szekszárd wine region. The area is located at the western edge of the Alföld (Great Hungarian Plain) in southern Hungary and produces fragrant, well-structured red wines, mostly from Kekfrankos, Kadarka, and the Bordeaux varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. White wines are also produced here around Bátaszék, most often from Olaszrizling, Tramini and Chardonnay. The symbol of the city a sarcophagus confirms the fact, that Roman settlers cultivated vines around Alisca (Szekszárd) in the 3rd century. Emperor Probus was famous for his devotion for wine and established vineyards throughout Pannonia. (Western part of today’s Hungary). Later in the 18th century German farmers brought their discipline and sophisticated viticulture. Today’s winemakers are proud of their traditions and appreciate the winemaking heritage of the region. Vida, Takler, Dúzsi or Heimann are all emblematic individuals of Szekszárd and are devoted to make wines of excellent quality.
